Just Play It is a two-hour “conversation” between two pianists comprised of both dialogue and music. Written in Mandarin Chinese by director/playwright Ismene Ting, the script is based on over eighty interviews and improvisation sessions with American pianist John Vaughan and his blind Taiwanese piano student Hsu Zhe-Cheng. Containing an eclectic blend of theater and musical genres, the show defies simple description, which initially created difficulties in marketing the work to the public. However, word of mouth and on-line praise from passionate viewers, who consistently remark on the production’s depth, originality and emotional impact, have led to more than 150 performances in over 40 different cities throughout Taiwan and China. Just Play It is in its 8th year and continues to excite and inspire audiences.
